Walking Podgórz, Toruń's left-bank district
Torun, Polen

Władysław Jagiełło built a castle on the left bank of the Vistula in 1423, and its gate tower still stands in the flood meadow opposite Toruń's Old Town. The district behind it, Podgórz, was a town in its own right until 1938. The postcard view of Toruń exists only from this bank.

Dybów Castle and the view from Kępa Bazarowa

Zamek Dybów (Dybów Castle ruins), Torun
Zamek Dybów (Dybów Castle ruins), Torun

Zamek Dybów is a squat 15th-century ruin in red brick and the left bank's headline sight: a surviving gate tower and ragged curtain walls round a grass courtyard, the gothic spires of the Old Town standing across the water behind it. The city's culture agency took the site over in 2024, cleaned it up and reopened it for regular visits. Entry costs 0 zł and nobody mans a ticket desk, so you walk straight in.

The interior opens on weekdays, 12:00 to 17:00. At weekends, with works still going on, you see the ruin only from outside, so come midweek if the inside matters to you. Guided slots and events are arranged through the Toruńska Agenda Kulturalna Cultural Hub ([email protected], +48 538 476 385).

Kępa Bazarowa reserve lies over the Piłsudski bridge, 15 minutes on foot from the Old Town: 32.4 hectares of riparian forest wrapped round the best panorama in the city. Behind you stand 40-metre poplars and willows, Natura 2000 ground with white-tailed eagles and beavers. At the end of ul. Majdany, on the river's edge, the timber-decked "Panorama Torunia" platform puts the full medieval skyline of walls, gates and church towers straight ahead across the broad Vistula. The space is free and open.

Down ul. Poznańska

The former Podgórz town hall (ul. Poznańska 63) proves this was once a separate town. The 1907 red-brick corner block mixes neo-gothic and neo-renaissance under a tall crenellated turret, on the junction of Poznańska and Drzymały among pre-war tenements. Inside are offices and a post office, so take it from the pavement. The tenements worth slowing down for run at numbers 95, 91, 89, 84, 78, 75 and 38.

Dom Muz Podgórz (ul. Poznańska 52) has been the district's social centre since 1957, a modest 1950s culture house with a small hall and a library. The programme is craft and theatre workshops, children's shows and local history evenings, at 0 zł to 30 zł. It runs on booked workshops and ticketed shows, so ring (56) 664 49 12 or email [email protected] before you turn up. Check what is on if you want Podgórz as residents use it. The building stands on the plot where the Browar Pomorski brewery blew up in January 1945.

The Franciscan church and the old cemeteries

The Church of SS Peter and Paul, on Podgórz's main street, is the oldest building in the district and the monument locals lead with. Founded in 1644 and consecrated in 1659, it is plain whitewashed baroque with no bell tower at all, just two tiny bell turrets of 1753 on the ridge, joined to a two-storey friary wrapped round a courtyard. A small pond sits in front of it on the street. King John II Casimir lodged in that friary in 1658 while directing the siege that took Toruń back from the Swedes.

The church is a working Franciscan parish and a Marian sanctuary, so visits fit round the Mass timetable. A weekday morning is the quiet time. Entry is free.

The old Podgórz cemeteries (ul. Poznańska 104) hold the district's quieter history. The oldest burial ground dates from the 1810s. Three tall stone crucifixion sculptures stand together on the site of the 1582 church of St Anne, which lasted until Napoleon's siege of 1813. Around them, under old trees, lie 19th-century graves with German inscriptions, cast-iron crosses and the Thoms family mausoleum, and those inscriptions tell you who lived here before 1920. The cemeteries are open daily and free. This is still consecrated ground, so come in a small group.

Park Tysiąclecia and the armoured battery

Park Tysiąclecia, off ul. Podgórska, is the open green between Podgórz and Stawki, 19.3 hectares rebuilt for 12 million złoty and finished in 2020. Its centrepiece is the old Prussian fortress moat channel, refilled with water and crossed by footbridges. Mature tree avenues run through it, and there are dog runs, outdoor gym kit and a big playground with a zip line. The park is unrestricted and costs nothing, which makes it the easiest stop to pair with the castle if you have children along.

Muzeum Fortyfikacji Pancernej Twierdzy Toruń (Battery AB IV), Torun

Muzeum Fortyfikacji Pancernej Twierdzy Toruń (ul. Poznańska 191-199), Battery AB IV, is an experimental concrete armoured battery of 1895 dug into pine-scrub earthworks, its rotating steel gun turret set flush with the ground. Underneath, brick-and-concrete galleries are crammed with Prussian and Soviet hardware, including an intact Polish SBF-180 shelter. Nothing else quite like it survives in Europe.

The Toruń Fortification Society runs the battery and the season is short, April to September. It opens on the first and third Sunday of the month, 10:00 to 14:00, and anything outside that is by prior arrangement. A guided visit takes an hour and costs 5 zł. Book on 607 054 249 or [email protected], and ask for extra fortress objects when you book if you want a longer morning underground.

The sanctuary west of Podgórz

Sanktuarium NMP Gwiazdy Nowej Ewangelizacji i św. Jana Pawła II (Droga Starotoruńska 3) is the biggest landmark on Toruń's left bank. The Redemptorists run it as a pilgrimage destination inside the Radio Maryja complex on open ground: a vast modern pale-stone church with a domed crossing, a free-standing campanile and a gold mosaic interior. It was built to hold pilgrim coaches, so numbers are never the problem here.

The sanctuary stands 3 km west of Podgórz centre, a short bus or bike ride off the Poznańska walk. It is open daily all year and free. Visits are not allowed while Mass is said, which on weekdays is at 07:00, 12:00 and 18:00. On Sundays Mass is at 08:00, 12:00 and 18:00.

Eating on ul. Poznańska

Pan Burger (ul. Poznańska 14) is the quickest proper lunch at the Old Town end of the district, a tiny minimalist room with a counter and a few stools. It is where a Toruń food-truck brand, Burger M.E.N., came to a stop and stayed. Expect 25 zł to 40 zł. Open 10:00 to 23:00 Monday to Friday, and 11:00 to 21:00 at weekends. Call 791-825-825 for a bigger order to carry out.

Pizzeria Wiki, Torun
Pizzeria Wiki, Torun

Pizzeria Wiki (ul. Poznańska 73) has held the same ground-floor room in a pre-war tenement for 15 years, cars parked nose-in right outside the door. The board lists 30 pizzas, vegetarian and hot ones among them, at 30 zł to 50 zł. This is the default sit-down meal in Podgórz, so ring 56 651 32 20 or 692 880 845 ahead for a table. Buses 10, 20, 29, 36 and 44 stop at the door.

Ajsu Kebab (ul. Poznańska 74) occupies the bright street-level corner of the modern block locals call "Kamienica pod Rybą", after the fish sculpture on its facade. Pita, lavash, wraps and plates, falafel included, come off a fast counter at 20 zł to 35 zł. It opens 11:00 to 22:00 daily, and to 23:00 on Friday and Saturday. Phone 695 667 206 for a large order.

Papudajnia (ul. gen. Hallera 84) is the Polish lunch in Podgórz itself, a small neighbourhood bistro with a canteen-style counter and a handwritten daily menu. People order the schabowy and the placek po węgiersku, at 25 zł to 40 zł. It is open 11:00 to 18:00 every day, so plan it for the middle of your walk. Book on +48 783 227 792.

Planeta Lewobrzeże Streetfood & Bar, Torun
Planeta Lewobrzeże Streetfood & Bar, Torun

Planeta Lewobrzeże Streetfood & Bar (ul. Łódzka 20) sits 1.5 km east of Podgórz centre and is the only real late-night drinking spot on this side of the river. Kebabs come off an open grill behind the counter on house-made lahmacun flatbread, and the bar seating at the back is dim. Reckon on 30 zł to 60 zł. It runs to 21:30 midweek and 22:00 at weekends, with Friday and Saturday the busy nights.

Ricky Ricky z Ameryki (ul. Łódzka 35) lies 2 km from Podgórz centre and is run by its owner, an American chef with 30 years behind him. Burgers, American pizza, ribs and a Steak & Cheese sub come out of an open kitchen, there is an oldschool popcorn machine by the door, and the filter coffee is bottomless. Prices land at 40 zł to 70 zł, daily 12:00 to 20:45. The room is small, so book before you arrive.

Staying on the left bank

Hotel i Camping Tramp (ul. Kujawska 14) is the obvious base on this side of the water, run by the city sports authority MOSiR and a Mister Camping award-holder since 2002. The tree-shaded ground holds rows of year-round timber cabins, a tent field and caravan pitches with hook-ups, along with tennis and football courts and a new outdoor pool complex. Camping starts at 25 zł per person. Rooms and cabins run 150 zł to 250 zł.

It is set up for organised parties, with 116 beds across rooms and cabins and a conference room to sit them in. The tent field takes 120 pitches and the caravan ground 90, and Bar Tramp is open 24h doing cheap meals. Toruń Główny station is walkable from the gate, and the castle and the panorama platform are a short ride. For a bed on the Old Town side instead, start with the Torun hotel search.

Planning notes

Two stops fix your dates: the castle interior opens on weekdays, and the armoured battery only in season, on the first and third Sunday of the month. Book the battery visit and any Dom Muz workshop by phone before you travel. See the Torun guide for the right bank.
